Extending Your Growing Season

Gardening season is just around the corner and University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners of Douglas County want to get you off to a great start. Join them for a series of informative gardening sessions offered free of charge without pre-registration. These lunch-time sessions from noon to 1 p.m. are offered in conjunction with the Douglas County Library. Bring your lunch or snack to the Douglas County Library (one session held in the Extension Meeting Room down the hall from the library) and explore Minnesota Gardening!

Tuesday, April 16 – Extending Your Growing Season by Ron Branch. Learn new concepts to extend your growing season. We will talk about low tunnels and row covers and their effectiveness.

Monday, April 29 – Planting New Trees by John Stone. Get tips on planting new trees and keeping them healthy. Did you know their water needs depend on size? Help your new trees survive our winters with best practices. Note: this class is on a Monday.

Tuesday, May 14 – Pests by Joel Kangas. How can you win the fight against garden pests? Come and learn how to maintain a healthy balance in your garden.

Tuesday, May 28 – Monarchs by Daisy Stahlberg. Help maintain the diminishing monarch population by learning how you can help them with habitat and food. Learn about different types of milkweed and how to protect the monarch’s eggs and caterpillars.

Tuesday, June 11 – Bees by Lewis Struthers. Hear about the fascinating lives of bees; why they are vital and what you can do to help maintain a healthy population. Note: this class is in the U of M Extension Meeting Room located down the hall from the Douglas County Library.

Tuesday, June 25 – Community Read, “Shelterbelts” In keeping with the era of this book, Robin Trott will speak about Victory Gardens and Pat Jepsen will speak on the history of the shelterbelts.

Tuesday, July 9 – Lilies by Kathy Janke. Do you love lilies? Have you wondered how to plant and care for them? What varieties will grow in our area? Learn the answers to these questions and more. (Lilium family or true lilies)

Tuesday, July 23 – Houseplants by Robin Trott. Don’t suffer with the winter blues because you can’t be in your garden! Learn all about growing houseplants and the satisfaction you get from your indoor plantings.

Tuesday, August 6 – Seed Collecting by Shauna Loxtercamp and Daisy Stahlberg. It’s easy to save seeds and save $$$$. In the fall when seed heads dry you can harvest seeds from many flowers, herbs and vegetables like pumpkins, beans, etc. to use next spring. Just be sure the seeds are not from hybrid plants.

Tuesday, August 20 – Sauerkraut by Lowell Anderson. Come and hear about the benefits and fun of making sauerkraut at home. We will talk about the old-fashioned way of making your own sauerkraut, a healthy food, full of probiotics!
