Don’t miss keynote speaker Carrie Larson on New and Exciting Annuals for 2019. Growing up in a radio station where everything was talk, talk, talk required an outlet. That outlet was gardening. When I was a kid I had no idea what horticulture was, and yet I was an active participant every day. Our family garden was 100’ x 100’ and the weeding and harvesting crew consisted of three of five siblings. Many a hot day there was the Brewer game on the portable radio and an occasional direct hit of a dirt clod in the back from my little brother. Weekends were spent at Siefert’s Nursery, my siblings and I popping fuchsia blossoms while Mom and Dad were in the root cellar picking out trees, shrubs or asparagus roots. We always got to name our trees. We fought over who would get the maples or the birch, none of us cared much for the evergreens.
Today the maples remain, the radio station is still manned by my mother, and the five of us have moved on and created our own homesteads with gardens. I went to school intending to be a microbiologist and found horticulture. I fell in love with both the industry and my husband. The industry and my family have grown over the last 25 years, and now my kids are growing up and starting to live their own lives. It is wonderful to see them bringing some of that love with them. It is my wish that all kids could experience the thrill of watching life come from a little seed, learn the responsibility of caring for that life and seeing what it can become.
My talk will be on the new varieties of flowering plants that will be available in the spring of 2019. We will talk about the best way to grow these plants and how to put them together to make the most complementary containers. A lot of new and exciting breeding has been taking place in the industry regarding tomatoes, strawberries, herbs and vegetables recently to make these plants productive in containers as well as the garden. There are so many new plants to choose from now and I will help you weed through those that are worth your time and space!
