A Note from Mary about her background:
I was the youngest of five and grew up on a ranch in a remote area of northwestern South Dakota. While to some a ranch might sound like a romantic “Heartland” episode with cattle and horses, it was also very far from stores and neighbors. We relied on ourselves and each other to play and to take advantage of available resources.
My mother encouraged us to be creative, to use our imaginations. We liked drawing and would use anything on hand including crayons and pencils to draw, color and make simple crafts.
Occasionally in one of the area newspapers, it would feature a little drawing with the caption “Draw Me” and enter to… I was too young to understand what the newspaper wanted us to do but mom made drawing the caption a competition between anyone in the house. She would draw along with an older brother, I would try and sometimes my sister joined. Mom didn’t have formal training, she just used her natural gifts, offered suggestions, gave praise and saved paper for us to use. I particularly recall opening up regular mailing envelopes. The inside was rather nice and sturdy to draw on and was always clean and white. I tell my kids “You think this generation recycles?!! You didn’t live with my mother in the middle of nowhere!!
At a young age, I learned creating something to be proud of comes with practice, patience and a little guidance. We raised 4 children on a farm. I believe they are creative and can achieve what they can be proud of with practice, patience and guidance. Come join me and see how proud you can be of your creative side. And yes, I am still conservative and recycle, “thanks mom”.
See you soon,
Mary
